Ecuadorean Pottery Spindle Whorl Bead Necklace

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 1000 CE. A lovely necklace composed of twenty pottery spindle whorl beads with spherical bodies, slight carinations along the lower body or midsections, and a perforated suspension hole. Each bead features incised images of abstract avian figures, and their fine detailing is brought forth with white pigment. The beads are strung with modern red thread within individual ovoid loops, and the terminals are capped with a woven loop and an attached red button. Size (necklace): 20.25" L (51.4 cm); (largest bead): 0.5" W x 0.4" H (1.3 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: ex-HDE Enterprise/ Hank Johnson collection, Denver, Colorado before 2000

Condition Report: Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Pottery spindle whorl beads are ancient, and red thread and button fastener are modern. Minor nicks to some beads, with softening to some finer details, and losses to white pigment on some beads, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
