Egyptian Faience Amulet of a Hedgehog

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet of a petite size depicting a hedgehog standing atop an integral rectangular plinth. The animal has a barrel-shaped body adorned with dozens of thin striations suggestive of its characteristic spines, and a short tail curls along the posterior. The head is almost crocodilian in form with an elongated snout, an upturned nose, circular eyes, and perky ears, with traces of blue-green glaze across the eyes and mouth. Size: 1.375" L x 0.75" H (3.5 cm x 1.9 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California collection, California, USA, acquired through descent 2006; ex-private California collection, USA, before 2000

Condition Report: Loss to suspension loop in center of back as shown. Minor nicks to head, body, and integral plinth, with fading to original glaze pigmentation, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice traces of glaze on head.
