Egyptian Glazed Faience Ushabti

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-built faience ushabti of a petite size that is covered in lustrous blue glaze. The minimalist figure stands in mummiform atop fused legs, holds an incised pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and has a seed bag incised behind the left shoulder. The face features protruding ovoid eyes, a broad nose, bulging cheeks, and a false beard, all framed within the lappets of a tripartite wig. A lovely example of ancient Egyptian funerary tradition! Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Condition Report: Loss top front of feet as shown. Minor abrasions and pitting to surfaces, and light encrustations within recessed areas primarily around face. Great preservation of blue glaze throughout.
