Egyptian New Kingdom Faience Ra Horakhty Amulet

[ translate ]

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 18th to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 664 BCE. A mold-made faience amulet in the form of the god Ra-Horakhty which translates to "Ra (who is) Horus of the Horizons." This amulet includes a small loop on one side of his head so it could be worn for protection. The deity possesses a falcon head topped by a sun disc and holds a scepter in front of his body. Ra-Horakhty was created in later Egyptian mythology to link Horakhty - a sunrise aspect of Horus - to Ra - the ancient Egyptian sun god and king of the deities as well as father of creation. Horus represented Ra in human form as the Pharaoh of Egypt. Scholars have posited that Ra-Horakhty (also Re Horakhty) referred to the sun's journey as Ra from horizon to horizon, or that it intended to present Ra (or Re) as a deity symbolizing hope, aspirations, and rebirth. The surface of the faience is glazed a brilliant blue and is a fine example of a protective amulet. Size: 1.875" L x 0.75" W (4.8 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
