Egyptian New Kingdom Wooden Mallet (Votive)
Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1549 to 1076 BCE. A hand-carved wooden sculptor's mallet meant to be left as a votive offering, perhaps in the tomb of a sculptor of high status or exceptional skill. The piriform body has sloping walls, an incised ring around the base, and a petite opening on the top that leads to a hollow interior. The top features a conical plug that may have doubled as the 'handle' at one time, and it too has an incised ring around the base. Typical sculptors' mallets were carved from solid wood to bear repeated blows, so a hollow example is quite rare. Size: 1.8" W x 3" H (4.6 cm x 7.6 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition Report: Losses to section of handle as shown. Minor chips to upper periphery of mallet body, with a couple of stable hairline fissures, minor staining, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and patina throughout. Handle fragment is removable from body.
