Egyptian Third Intermediate Pottery Overseer Ushabti

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate period, 21st to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1076 to 664 BCE. A hand-sculpted pottery overseer ushabti meant to manage the multitudes of worker ushabti who symbolically tended the fields of Osiris in the afterlife. The figure stands in mummiform with fused feet, wears a bulky skirt, holds one arm tightly against the slender hips, and grasps a whip in the other. The petite face bears ovoid eyes, a slender nose that is flush with the cheeks, and a tapered chin, all beneath a simple bag wig. Size: 1.25" W x 3.8" H (3.2 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.3" H (10.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Julian Bird collection, London, England, acquired between 1970 and 2012
