Egyptian diorite grinding palette, Middle Kingdom
An Egyptian diorite grinding palette, Middle Kingdom, c. 2061 - 1690 BC, with central recessed area for grinding powders bordered by an incised cartouche, small grooved 'spout' which extends beyond the end on one side. The bottom of the vessel is angled to lower the weight with rectangular flat base. A marvelous example of a noble person's toiletry kit, the varying depth of the recessed area suggesting the palette was used in antiquity. L: 5 2/5 in (13.7cm), W: 3 in (7.6cm). Ex collection of Herb Goldfarb, New York. Mr. Goldfarb was the owner of Aladdin's Antiques in Brooklyn, New York in the 1950's to 1969 before moving from New York City and opening a smaller antique shop.
