Emanuel Villanis (1858–1914) Art Nouveau "Hostage" Bronze Lamp & Millefiori Shade
Early 20th century, French
Emanuel Villanis Art Nouveau "L'Otage" (The Hostage) bronze figural lamp is a premier example of turn-of-the-century French decorative art. While Villanis (1858–1914) originally cast "L'Otage" around 1900 as a standalone bronze sculpture, premier foundries in Paris adapted his most popular statues into high-end figural lamps. The lamp features a romanticized, melancholy young maiden tied or chained to a stylized, broken tree trunk. Her head is downcast with a dramatic, somber facial expression, and her hair flows softly down her back, capturing the epitome of Art Nouveau sensuality mixed with classical tragedy. The pairing of a Villanis base with a Millefiori glass shade creates a highly sought-after, striking aesthetic contrast.
Signed "E. Villanis" at the base.
H. 23" / base: 7" x 6"
