"The Ferryman's Daughter", by Louis Emile Adan, photogravure [etching], published by Selmar Hess, New York (late 1870s), signed under the design "E. Adan" and "Photogravure", while "Selmar Hess, New York" is imprinted on the bottom of the plate.

Heavy stock paper, design 10.1/4" x 6.1/4" [263mm x 160mm], the entire plate 12.1/4" x c.9" [316mm x 230mm]; a little aging and soiling, very good condition.

Louis Emile Adan (1839-1937), was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and studied with Francois-Edouard Picot (1786-1866), a successful painter and follower of Jacques-Louis David. Adan made his Salon debut in 1863, a year distinguished by the protest staged by artists when the conservative jury rejected two-thirds of the art works submitted to the Salon.Adan's work during the 1860s embraced the mainstream tradition of neo-classicism espoused by J.A.D. Ingres (1780-1867) who was a much-revered figure by the 1860s. By the mid-1870s, as France began rebuilding after the ruinous Franco-Prussian War, Adan appears to have focused increasingly on scenes of daily life, perhaps following the Realist dictate to paint images of one's own time. He was rewarded for this effort with a third class medal for "Dernier jour de vente" [Last Day of the Sale] at the 1875 Salon.

By the middle of the 1880s, Adan was actively engaged in the naturalist movement. He was grouped together with Jules Breton, Leon Lhermitte and Jules Bastien-Lepage. His reputation as a distinguished painter was further recognized in 1892 when he became a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and again in 1900 when he was asked to sit on the jury of both the Salon and the Salon des Artistes Francais.

The creation of the photogravure plate was a complicated process requiring a work by a photographer and experienced master-engraver. First, a copper plate was coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality intaglio print that can reproduce the detail and continuous tones of a photograph. It is a manual process. Therefore, the quality of the photogravure depends on the masterly execution by the engraver.

Due to relative softness of copper, the editions of photogravures were limited to a few thousand copies similarly to copper engravings and etchings.

Artwork will be mailed unframed.
