English Dated Needlepoint Sampler Sabina Goodwin 1812. Embroidered in silk on fine linen weave. Geometric strawberry and vine border, over four alphabets and numerals 1 to 26, separated by variously stitched bands, all over mirrored pairs of two handled vases issuing flowers, bracketing the poem: Death at a Distance we but slightly fear, / He brings his Terrors as he draws more near. / Through Povertery , Pain, Slavry we drudge on, / The worst of Brings better please than none: / No Price too dear to purchase Life and Breath, / The heaviest Burthen easier born than Death. Over flowering plants and basket of fruit on a bar band; over Sabina Goodwin Aged 10 / April 20 1812. Under glass in ebonized carved wood frame. Suffolk, England. 1812. {Approximate dimensions: 11 1/4 x 12 7/8 inches sight; 14 x 16 inches framed. Condition: A couple of minor pin dots holes, near left edge, 1/4" hole by right handle, lowest embroidered flowerpot, right side. Minor fading. It is highly recommended to remount the sampler as it is possible the wood backing will leach onto the linen. Sabina Goodwin, listed in the birth registry at Carleton, Suffolk, August 22, 1802; daughter of William and Edna Bloom Goodwin.
