Ernst Stuven followed Johannes Voorhout (1647-1717), who painted portraits in Hamburg, to Amsterdam to become his pupil. After his training from Voorhout, Stuven painted flower and fruit still lifes with Willem van Aelst (1627-1683) and Abraham Mignon (1640-1679). Stuven became well-known in Amsterdam as an independent master.
