Etruscan Terracotta Votive - Head of a Youth

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $1500**

Classical World, Etruria (Italy), ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A fine, mold-made terracotta votive depicting the head of a handsome young male. His quixotic visage is comprised of large almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils, a prominent nose, full lips, naturalistic ears, and a slender neck, all crowned by a characteristically Etruscan wavy coiffure beneath a long veil. The unarticulated verso forms the veil which also covers the crown of his head. Votive heads like this example were placed in temples as forms of requests or offerings to thank the gods. Such offerings were especially prolific during times of conflict. This example is particularly fine, with wonderfully preserved details. Size: 6.5" W x 10.5" H (16.5 cm x 26.7 cm); 11.375" H (28.9 cm) on included custom stand.
