Extremely Rare Civil War Canteen
Rare BARTHOLOMAE PATENT Filter Canteen, with cover and a partial strap. Rare in this condition with its original blue wool cover and partial leather strap. Invented and patented by Charles Bartholomae, the tin canteen measures about 7” high overall and 7” wide, kidney shaped with a funnel-like spout with an applied brass label reading “PATENTED JULY 3rd 1861” and two other lead spouts. In his patent Bartholomae described his invention “as a canteen which may be worn with greater facility than those of usual construction, more readily filled and more convenient to drink from, and one supplied with an efficient filtering device, which may be used whenever necessity requires”. The condition is good. Two filter units are missing, Cover, while worn on the edges is in relatively good condition. Strap is somewhat brittle but none of it is missing.
