Extremely early Ganesh from India
Extremely early Ganesh from India, Afghanistan, or Pakistan. Entered in to The Asian Art Museum collection in 1960 as part of the original Avery Brundage collection, and de-accessioned by the Museum 15 years ago in preparation for their move to their new location. Has loss and wear as seen in the photos. A very rare object- he is one of the earliest portable Geneshes I’ve seen. Likely over 1000 years old, and possibly much older. Has the name of the archaeologist who originally collected and cataloged him (Farquar), along with 2 sets of museum numbers. Sits a little over 3.75 inches tall. Figure is 3.75 inches tall, height on custom stand is 5 inches. (Item is being re posted after having custom stand made)
