The lid decorated with a theatrical mask - the grip in form of an Eagle head - at the front of the nozzle portrait of the Roman wine god Bacchus (I presume) Theatrical masks were used in the Roman and Greek theathers. Signed around the base "F. Barbedienne" for Ferdinand Barbedienne. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) was a French manufacturer- he is mainly known for its art bronze reproduction foundry. In 1839, Barbedienne founded the House where he could reproduce in bronze most of the statues in museums in Europe, sufficiently reduced in order to adorn the modern interiors. His idea was to democratise art, by making faithful reproductions of masterpieces accessible. The themes are often allegorical, and draw largely from classical Even today, it is quite common to find in "bourgeois" homes bronzes signed Barbedienne. He applied his methods to the works of the sculptors of his time (Barye, Fremiet, Mène, etc.) and created many models of bronze furniture, enamels, cloisonné, wooden high and bas-reliefs etc. The quality of casting, chiselling and patina, just as Barbedienne did, made that gradually, the signature of the founder has been increasing in significance. Particularly thanks to Ferdinand Barbedienne, the relationship between the sculptor and the founder became analogous to the relationship between the composer and the music performer.
