FINE AND RARE CARVED AND POLYCHROME PAINT-DECORATED WHITE PINE SHIP FIGUREHEAD OF A WOMAN WITH OUTSTRETCHED ARMS, PROBABLY AMERICA, CIRCA 1855

Height 77 ¾ in. by Width 17 in. by Depth 42 in.

Condition Report:
The figurehead has been conserved. Many coats of varnish and paint were removed and much of the painted surface which remains was old in-service paint. A section along the left side of her hair was replaced and there were a few other small patches filled. The areas where the original paint was worn away were in-painted to match. The right foot was repaired using all the original parts. At the top and bottom of the mount, there is a small amount of rot as one would expect in a figurehead of this age. The back of the mount also retains some of the original heavy duty iron mounting rods. The figurehead is mounted to a newly constructed wood and metal base which is roped carved. Note: Wood samples from the figurehead were microscopically analyzed by Harry Alden is a professional wood analyst. Mr. Alden determined that the figure was constructed of white pine, a wood indigenous in New England and Canada.
