FRANCE Military Medal (M�daille Militaire) Napoleon III issue. Measures 45 mm x 25 mm. Circular silver medal with Imperial eagle suspension; the face with a circular central medallion with the head of Emperor Napoleon III facing left encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed �LOUIS NAPOLEON� within a laurel wreath border; the reverse with a circular central medallion inscribed �VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE� within a blue enamel ring encircled by a laurel wreath; blue enamel with slight chips to the front at the base and almost entirely lacking on the reverse, slightly discolored in the center. The Military Medal ranks second amongst all French decorations, giving precedence only to the Legion of Honour (and an exception made for the Order of the Liberation). It was created by Louis Napoleon on 22 January 1852 for long-serving non-commissioned officers and soldiers and has been awarded ever since. This example is from the �Empire� period, 1852 to 1870 and was awarded in the Franco Prussian War and the Crimea Campaign, rarer model. in good condition. The daughter of Parisian couturier Jack Spaner and his wife Jacqueline Brassiens, the former Janine Spaner (1928-2019) moved to New York in the 1950s, where she worked as office manager of the Air France office on lower Broadway. She returned to Paris with the goal of finding a husband, and, on a lark, answered an ad in Le Monde placed by a "Couple de diplomates" in search of a "secretaire particuliere." Following a series of five interviews, among them with the Duke and the Duchess of Windsor, she was chosen over many applicants and became for a decade the trusted assistant and confidant of one of the world's most famous and fashionable women.
