Franciska Clausen is regarded as one of Denmark's most significant modernist artists for her important contributions to the European art scene of the early 20th century. After studying at several art schools in Germany, France and Denmark, Clausen took impressions from the emerging modernist movements in Europe, particularly Cubism and Constructivism. Embracing the ideas of form, geometry and abstraction as the core of her artistry, she began experimenting with breaking down and reshaping subjects into simple, geometric shapes and lines.
During this spring's Moderna & Nutida auction, Stockholms Auktionsverk has the privilege of selling a small collection of works by Clausen, all from the important 1920s. Her works from the time exude a sense of movement and rhythm, where she uses sharp contrasts and bold color combinations to create visually striking compositions. By manipulating lines, shapes and colors, she creates works that distort and reshape the viewer's perception of space to create a sense of depth and dimension.
While Clausen worked from the ideals of modernism, the sense of a personal style and expression was maintained in her work. The art created during the 1920s showed a balance between the abstract and the concrete, combining structured forms and lines with subtle shades of emotional expression and states of mind.
During this period, Clausen also explored various artistic techniques and materials. She often used oil painting to create her works, but was also interested in other techniques, such as collage and mixed media. By experimenting with different materials, she was able to explore new ways of expressing her artistic ideas and create works with deeper dimensions and textures.
