The authenticity of the work offered here was confirmed in 1988 by Hans-Peter Defregger, who has dated the painting to the 1880s due to its characteristic brushwork. The portrait study is recorded in the archive under no.102332.
Condition:
Oil on panel. Paint surface partly with slight superficial scratch marks as well as partly minimal colour loss. Fine crackle pattern visible. Sporadically older retouching.
Under UV: Small retouching along the edges. Dotted retouching in the background, as on the face of the sitter. Further small retouching on the garment of the figures, as well as on the hands and partly in the foreground. Varnish appears irregular in fluorescent green.
