FRENCH VICTORIAN DAMASK LINEN SERVIETTES (12) - Linen - Early 20th century
It is rather rare these days to obtain a complete set of serviettes and it implies that most probably they were little or never used These serviettes could well be Irish as they came to us through the French - Irish Aristocratic Dynasty family who have lived in France since the 15th C. The damask design itself is deliberately simple as the strength lies in the superb and beautiful initials E. D. The embroiderer certainly had panache and taste as the initials are very unusually applied and the red "pea stitching" finishes the serviettes perfect and gives them extra beauty.
