[ translate ]

Fern Bisel PEAT (1893-1971, illustrator and art editor).

Children’s Play Mate Magazine. Cleveland, Ohio: published by A.R. Mueller, January 1944-February 1946, June 1946, August 1946-May 1947. 37 issues various (vol.15 #8 – vol.18 #12), octavo (9 x 6 inches; 228 x 152mm). Illustrations after Fern Bisel Peat, Elaine Ends, Angela Tuite and others, the central pair of leaves in each issue colored, otherwise uncolored. (The majority of the text pages toned, occasional penciling by original owners, all 37 issues are generally very clean but there is one issue with tears and damage [March 1947]). Original colored pictorial paper wrappers, many featuring designs by Fern Bisel Peat.

A quite extensive selection from the period when Fern Bisel Peat was the magazine’s art editor: all but one in excellent condition (excepting the inevitable toned text). This long-running periodical features stories, poems, rebuses, recipes, activities, crafts, science experiments, and health articles for children – typically an issue will contain 52 pages. The readers are encouraged to fill-in, join-up and cut-out, a mantra which has ensured that complete unsullied copies are a rarity. (37)
