This wood and alabaster depiction of a Buddha was made in Burma in Mandalay style and dates from the 18th century. The hands and feet are carved from wood which were originally made from alabaster. The figure is made of lacquer and gold and decorated with numerous glass and mirror stone inlays. Buddha is shown in Padmasana with both feet turned upwards. His hands form the Bhûmisparsa Mudra, the gesture to touch the earth. His open left hand is on his lap and his right hand is pointing to the earth. Buddha used this gesture to call the earth to testify to the truth of his words. The enlightened being wears a royal robe that covers the entire body. It is richly decorated with curved ornaments and a gold iron element. The facial expression shows a meditative, happy smile The head forms a semicircular ushnisha. The Buddha shows usual signs of age and wear. Some stones are missing, paint and gold abrasion, dents, weathering cracks and loss of material are visible here and there.
