- Baule figurines of husbands (Blolo Bian) and wives (Blolo Bla) from the hereafter. - Baule figurines depicting a nature spirit, with the aim of appeasing it. Asie Usu figurines (“spirits of nature”) are less frequent than the Blolo Bla. The difference between the two is as follows: The spirit of nature is always sitting, whereas the spouse from the hereafter is always standing. In Baule figurines, we can distinguish the evocations of nature spirits (with a sacrificial patina) and that of the spirits related to romantic relationships (with a polished patina) . The first type of figurine represents the spirits of the bush with an ambivalent power, as is often the case in Africa, and feared for their malevolence: Figurines of these bush spirits are honoured to appease them and to obtain their good graces and protection.
