Fine Chancay Painted Wood Figures - Male, Female

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed at $1400**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A pair of Chancay/Huacho figures likely representing a husband and wife, both carved from wood, painted in red and black hues, and adorned with gauze turbans and textile wraps covering their bodies save where anatomy is exposed (Andean artisans are known for their textile production). Clearly the Chancay artisans employed a more primitive carving technique relative to the more advanced textile technique; however, the minimalist lines of the forms boast a certain charm and to the Huacho culture, the communicative and symbolic powers of these figures were most important. Custom stand. Size: each figure measures approximately 4.5" W x 14.5" H (11.4 cm x 36.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Derek Robinson collection, UK; ex-Stoddart collection, Oakton, VA, USA, acquired late 1960's

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

Display stands not described as included/custom in the item description are for photography purposes only and will not be included with the item upon shipping.
