Fine and Rare Queen Anne Shell Carved and Figured Walnut Compass-Seat Side Chair
possibly by James James (1730-1807)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1755

Chair marked IIII.
Height 42 1/2 in.

Condition Report:
In overall fine condition. The chair was over upholstered, likely sometime in 19th century, and the over-upholstery was subsequently removed and reverted to its original style. Tack holes outside of the seat rails are filled and obscured, and the seat rail glue blocks are replaced due to this alteration. The chair rail and seat frame are respectively marked as IIII, but it is unlikely that the seat frame is original, given the upholstery history. The splat and crest are in good condition.
