[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $200**

East Asia, China, Republic Period, ca. early 20th century CE. A fabulous ensemble of 5 examples from Republican Era China: 2 figures, 2 ornaments, and a brass lidded jar. Hand-carved from reddish-brown wood, the first figure is shown standing and holding a scroll as he displays glass eyes, a pointed beard, a long moustache, and a receded hair line. Alternatively, the second figure is taller and made from leaded bronze. The fascinating figurine depicts the form of an aged man holding a sizable hat on his back and a basket on his left shoulder as he walks barefoot and smokes from a pipe. The serpentine ornament exhibits the form of an intricately carved, openwork flower pendant, while the other ornament is sculpted from green nephrite and presents an abstract rendition of two fish. Last, the brass vessel boasts a wonderful vegetal motif and is painted in hues of gold, scarlet, and white. It features a planar, emerald-hued base, a cylindrical body, and a flat lid with a slightly raised center topped by a gilt zoomorphic finial. This piece also showcases an emerald interior and is stamped with the word "CHINA" on its base. Size of largest: 3.5" W x 7.375" H (8.9 cm x 18.7 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
