Property of a descendant of William Beckford & The Dukes of Hamilton
Flemish School, circa 1660
Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, pointing at a painting, traditionally said to be Gonzales Coques
oil on copper
unframed: 16 x 12.8 cm.; 6 1/4 x 5 in.
framed: 30.5 x 26.7 cm.; 12 x 10 1/2 in.
Condition Report:
The thin copper plate is flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty with a slightly discoloured and uneven varnish. There is some slight frame abrasion visible along all four margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish underneath which a few small spots of retouching are made visible sparsely scattered along the margins and in the background. Otherwise the painting appears to be free of any intervention and in overall very good condition.
Provenance:
By repute William Beckford (1760-1844);
His daughter Susan Euphemia, Duchess of Hamilton (1786-1859);
Her granddaughter, Lady Mary Louise (1884-1957), only child and principal heir of William Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton, who married in 1906 James Graham (1878-1954), Marquis of Graham who in 1925 succeeded his father as 6th Duke of Montrose;
Thence by descent.
