Large, antique Buddha Phra Pidta in carved lacquered wood. Thailand. Period: 19th century. Gilded and base crafted with glass. Height: 46 cm, Base size: 21 x 17 cm Weight: about 7 kg Phra means ‘monk’ or amulet, and Pidta means ‘eyes closed’. The image of this figure hiding its face with its hands is said by some to symbolically represent Maha Thera Sanghajay in the traditional Sammabart meditation. By closing its eyes, it is not exposed to the evil surrounding it. Neither does one care about evil and the misdeeds it inspires. Therefore, one does not indulge in rumours, profanity, wrongdoing, or any type of crime. We remain safe from infamous acts, and are thus protected from all sorts of apprehensions and misfortunes as a result. Phra Pidta is known for bringing good fortune.
