21312: Fossil Gar Fish Lepisosteus simplex Eocene Green

[ translate ]

Fossil Gar Fish Lepisosteus simplex Eocene Green River Formation Wyoming, USA A very primitive fish, gars are readily identified by their "ganoid" scales which gives them a unique and ominous appearance. In terms of the Green River Lagerstätte, this variety is not common compared to the numerous other species of fossil fish found in the legendary Wyoming locality. An elongated snout and conical teeth are indicative of a predatory diet likely consisting of other types of fish. This massive example here measures an amazing 39 inches (99 cm) from tip to tail and is in a mottled matrix joined by two smaller fossil fish. The rectangular rock is framed with a light color border. The scales on this gar exhibit excellent preservation, and the fossil fish is nicely detailed although shows some compression. The lengthy Lepisosteus is fairly complete for this type of fossil with limited restoration to the tail area. The dark colored fish against the mottled yellowish-tan matrix is aesthetically pleasing, and fossil gars, especially of this quality, are a limited commodity. This example is ready to be installed on a wall as a nice addition to any serious collection. Overall Measurements: 50.00 x 20.87 x 1.97 inches (127.00 x 53.00 x 5.00 cm HID03101242017
