Four 20th C. Chinese Wood Panels - Isles of the Blest

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $175**

East Asia, China, Republic Period, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine ensemble of 4 hand-carved wood relief panels, all depicting scenes of the legendary Isles of the Blest, known as Penglai in Chinese, where the Eight Immortals are believed to reside with their families. Adorned with lustrous gold paint, glistening stucco, and pigments of pink and crimson, each of these impressive panels show elegant palaces amongst towering mountains and swaying trees. According to myth, on the Isles of the Blest, there is no agony and no winter, no rice bowl or wine glasses ever becomes empty, and fruits that can heal any illness, grant eternal youth, and raise the dead. The palaces of the Eight Immortals are believed to be made from gold and platinum, which is likely why they are adorned with gold paint in this representation. The glistening stones may also represent the jewels which are said to grow on trees in Penglai. Lovely floral borders boasting shiny gilding envelop 2 of the panels. Size of largest (all close in size): 13.375" L x 4.375" W (34 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany.
