Framed Chimu Inca Textile Fragment w/ Birds

Pre-Columbian, North/Central Peru, Chimu/Inca culture, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A fine textile panel fragment composed of tightly-woven fibers in cream, jet, ruby, and golden hues. The central register depicts dozens of stylized avian figures with petite bodies, large wings, and enormous heads with a singular diamond-shaped eye. Surrounding the central design are two thin, concentric lines upon which are a border of additional avian figures on the exteriors of each. Mounted in a frame against a fabric-lined backing. Size (textile): 3.25" W x 17.25" H (8.3 cm x 43.8 cm); size (frame): 6.125" W x 21.625" H (15.6 cm x 54.9 cm).
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
