Portrait of Francois Fenelon (1651-1715), engraved by Jacob Andreas Friedrich, undated, circa 1745, signed in plate "I.A. Fridrich sc.". Reference: The signature [I.A. Fridrich] on this copy is identical with the signature on the copies in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Jakob Andreas Friedrich, also known as Jacob Andreas Fridrich (1684-1751), was a German engraver, etcher, draughtsman, publisher, born in Nurnberg, 1684 and buried in Augsburg, 1751, student of Christoph Weigel in Augsburg, where he spent his career. Worked with Johann Georg Bergmuller. Succeeded by his son of the same name (1714-1779).

Francois de Salignac de la Mothe-Fenelon, more commonly known as Francois Fenelon (August 6, 1651 - January 7, 1715, Cambrai, France), was a French Roman Catholic archbishop, theologian, poet and writer. He is remembered mostly as the author of "The Adventures of Telemachus, Son of Ulysses", first published in 1699.

Provenance: This plate comes from a collection of engravings bound by the German art collector "A.L." The finalized collection of hand-numbered engravings is dated 1762 which provides additional warranty that the engravings are authentic and created prior to 1762; auctioned in London, UK.

Certification of Authenticity will be included upon buyers request.
