French School, 18th century- Head of a sleeping child; red chalk heightened with touches on white on laid paper laid down on card, 24.5 x 22 cm. Provenance: A. J. Ballingal, Chelsea, London; By descent. Note: The present work bears similarities to several sketches executed by Jean-Michel Moreau (1741-1814) of his daughters. See, for example, Anon. sale, Christie's, Paris, 21 March 2002, lot 176, as well as examples at the British Museum, the Institut Néerlandais in Paris, and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The handling here, however, is looser than that typical to Moreau.
