French School, "Boats Near the Cliffs," 19th c., oil on panel, presented in a period ornate gilt and gesso frame, H.- 7 5/8 in., W.- 10 1/2 in. Dimensions: Condition Report: Condition is consistent with age and use. The painting is not properly affixed within the frame. So, it moves around quite a bit. As a result gaps are visible, depending on which side the painting has landed on. Due to visible gap, flecking of paint around sides of painting is visible. There are very light scratches visible on proper lower right side, possibly from something being on top. A scratch (roughly ½ inch long) and flecking are visible on the very bottom of painting, which is consistent with frame wearing. Painting looks very dark, which is consistent with years of dirt accumulating. It could use a nice cleaning at some point. There is also a 1mm dot (fleck of paint loss) seen directly below boat in image. This could have been done around the time the artist was working on the painting, or possibly later. There is fine cracking of oil paint visible above cliffs in painting, which is consistent with age. The frame needs repair. Artwork should be properly fitted within frame and the proper right side, from top to almost bottom, has gesso and gilding missing. On the very top of the frame, there are slightly visible scratch marks. The proper left side of the frame shows two small white paint droplets and one slightly larger white paint area in the middle area of frame to the side. It is only visible if turning the painting to the side. The bottom left corner of the frame has also chipped. The face of the frame on the decorative border area shows wearing throughout, which might be intentional in part but also from overall age and moving around of the work. This is a handsome example. ______________________________________________________________________________ ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS.” NO STATEMENT REGARDING CONDITION OF ANY ITEM, WHETHER IT IS MADE ORALLY AT THE AUCTION OR ANY OTHER TIME, OR IN WRITING IN THE CATALOGUE OR ELSEWHERE, SHALL BE DEEMED TO BE A WARRANTY, REPRESENTATION, OR ASSUMPTION OF LIABILITY.
