In the early 1950s, in addition to his multilayered gestural pictures featuring spontaneous brushwork, Fritz Winter was also creating clearly ordered compositions centred around cohesive bands of colour.
With its clear repertoire of forms, “Nach unten” belongs to this second group of works. Working in an unusually large format, the artist has generated a number of curved, forking black and white bands that overlap. In front of a unified, rust-brown background, they seem to find themselves in a floating or also collapsing state of motion, surrounded by circular shapes in red, white and blue. The differences in the brushwork are striking: while the passages of black, red and blue are painted in an impasto manner and thus optically thrust themselves into the foreground, the white has been applied exclusively in washes and, gently shimmering, remains tied to the background.
All of Fritz Winter’s works from this period are characterised by a subtly balanced equilibrium. In spite of the very different organic forms the artist used to construct his compositions, the pictorial space retains a harmonious balance. Defined by diagonal lines and relationships between forms, the pictorial space in “Nach unten” links its dynamism with a floating, meditative calm.
