Description: 4to: [4] pp.; 33 pl. (some faint spotting and min. browning, some larger spots on the last map). - First English edition of this attractive atlas with focus on the ancient world. Illustrated with 33 bold double-page engraved maps by R.W. Seale and W.H. Toms covering the three divisions of the ancient world: Europe, Asia and Africa. On the maps two different typestyles, italic and roman, are used to distinguish between ancient and modern place names. They show a detailed topography with towns, churches, mosques and more. The map "Sicilia antiqua" shows an erupting Mount Etna. The map "Insularum Britannicarum faceis antiqua" includes an inset of Thule Island, also called Morrell Island, one of the southernmost of the South Sandwich Islands.
