GEORGE CHAMBERS SENIOR (BRITISH, 1803-1840)

The whaler 'Camden' approaching Whitby with the abbey beyond

Signed and dated 'G. Chambers 1826' (lower left)

Oil on canvas

16½ x 25in. (42 x 63.5cm.)

Between 1753 and 1837 whalers from Whitby were active in the Davis Strait. In 1832 the Phoenix was the only vessel to go out, returning with a record 234 tons of oil encouraging the owners (the Chapmans) to send two ships in 1833, the Camden and the Phoenix. Both vessels returned with large volumes of oil, but the price of whale oil and whalebone had fallen and, after unsuccessful voyages in 1837, both ships were withdrawn thus ending whaling as an industry from Whitby.

Small areas of light retouching in sky, relined.
