LOT 133

GEORGE SMITH OF CHICHESTER | A classical landscape

[ translate ]

Property from a UK Private Collection
GEORGE SMITH OF CHICHESTER
Chichester 1714 - 1776
A classical landscape

oil on canvas
180.6 x 149 cm.; 71⅛ x 58⅝ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is very discoloured. There are small spots of surface accretion scattered in the darker pigments. The network of craquelure has become more pronounced in the sky upper left, and there are some associated visible lines of retouching to mask this. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish underneath which these are confirmed, as well as further retouchings: in the female figure's proper right arm, scattered in her dress, in the background directly surrounding her and the male figure, as well as in their hands, and to a diagonal surface scratch just above them, measuring approx. 20cm. Further small spots are just visible scattered in the shrubbery centre and lower left, where the texture of the canvas also changes, but it is difficult to discern underneath the varnish. In overall fair condition. Offered in a carved and painted wooden frame with lambs tongue moulding, with losses around the edge.
