"Jakobides's Lecture du soir is the best picture in this year's Zappeion Hall art show in terms of light and shadow effects. The light from the candle, whose flame is hidden behind a piece of paper, floods the left part of the woman's face, illuminating her neck and the impeccable pleats of her dress. The soft tonal gradations on the fabric and the intense rendition of light on the ball of yarn, which looks like it's on fire in the dark, provide a brilliant perception of subtlety in art. The harmoniously beautiful face, showing no emotional response to what's being read, is surrounded by a mystic aura of empathy from the rays of light, while the paper's shadow is cast on her right wrist in a very natural way."
Palligenesia newspaper, April 11, 1898.

Lecture du soir was also praised by celebrated journalist, scholar, and pioneer feminist Callirhoe Parren (1861-1940): "The light with its mysteries of colours and radiant luminosities, the light with its great power and life has been tamed by Jakobides. What sweetness, what radiance, and what poetry does it pour on the face of the reader, on her hands and book, and on the inanimate objects around her. For me, the star of the Salon's oil paintings is this picture, glowing and smiling with its sweet light in the darkness of the night. I chant the hymn of my admiration for that golden-red and rose-yellow and yellow-white light, in which my soul sails with joy and true enchantment."
Efimeris ton Kyrion newspaper, April 26, 1898.
