GREAT RUSSIAN ART NOUVEAU ICON. A large and impressive Moscow Studio Art Nouveau icon of the Kazan Mother of God with Saints, depicting full-length images of St. Nicholas (left), and the Holy Prophet Elijah (right), both holding an icon of the Kazan Mother of God and standing in an expansive fanciful landscape with gradient background rendered within an ornate Art Nouveau style arched reserve with an incised faux enameled border decorated with crosses, strapwork decorated columns, and peacocks in geometric designs. The lower margin with cartouche and obliterated inscription. Of the highest quality. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (36 x 31 cm).
The offered icon is characteristic of the type and style of icon highly popular with the aristocracy at the turn of the century. There were a handful of icon workshops in Moscow who were bestowed with the Imperial warrant due to their craftsmanship and highly aesthetic appeal which incorporated the Neo-Byzantine style with finely decorated Art Nouveau borders. The workshop of Gurianov is one workshop that produced such icons. The same overall style is echoed in many of the noted graphic artists of the day such as Vasily Polenov, Ivan Ropet, Ilena Polenova, Ivan Bilibin, as well as others. Another characteristic aspect of these icons is the brick red painted verso and side edges.
