Pair of sterling silver rectangular trays with convex sides, flared border, gadrooned rim and fluted corners, each hand etched with a cockatrice crest of The Langleys Family (in Lancashire, England since the 14th century); each marked with crown leopard head, lion passant and date letter for 1767 on the bottom. Total weight 48.58 toz.
A cockatrice is a mythical beast, essentially a two-legged dragon or serpent-like creature with a rooster's head. The cockatrice was the heraldic beast of the Langleys of Agecroft Hall in Lancashire, England as far back as the 14th century. The Langleys lived at Agecroft Hall until 1561 when the male line failed. The Langleys were a powerful local family for several centuries with major land holdings across the area.
Prominent ancestors include Richard Langley's brother, William (1315-1386) who was Rector of Middleton. Another brother, was the grandfather of Bishop Thomas Langley who entered the service of John of Gaunt and became Lord Chancellor of England, Keeper of the Privy Seal and Bishop of Durham.
