Footnote: The illustrious design partnership of Ince & Mayew operated in London from 1759-1804. The firm s volume of engraved designs The Universal System of Household Furniture, dedicated to the Duke of Marlborough, 1759-63, was issued in rivalry with Thomas Chippendale s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker s Director. William Ince was principally responsible for the designs, while John Mayhew worked on the accounts, capital and marketing aspects of the business. Ince & Mayhew boasted an illustrious clientele which included George Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry as well as a number of Robert Adam s patrons such as the Earl of Kerry, the Duchess of Northumberland and Sir John Whitwell.
A related table by Ince & Mayhew with a serpentine top and fluted frieze, of somewhat larger scale, sold Christie s London, 19 November 2015, lot 531.
Condition Report: With a rich red/brown color to the figured timber. Structurally sound. General marks, scratches, rubbing and light wear. Reduced in depth. Originally with gallery. Originally with frieze drawer. With later cross support boards to underside. Top re-set. With areas of minor lifting, patched repair and overpainted restoration on areas of banded veneer. Wear to feet. With applied number 679 to back and written twice in chalk 679.
