Gerbrandt van den Eeckhout (b. Amsterdam 1621, d. s.p. 1674)

Saint Jerome in a rocky cave. At the very entrance to the simple hut, leaning against the rock face, sits Saint Jerome, deeply absorbed in his reading, the book resting upon his lap. At his feet lies a trunk, and his staff leans against a small earthen rise, upon which stand a jug with provisions and a simple wooden cross. To the left, outside the hut, the prayer bell is suspended. Signed and dated G. V. Eeckhout fe. An. 1654. Oil on canvas. 55×43 cm.

Provenance revised 7/3.
