Germany, Offices in China -- Hankow, 1898, 5pf Green, 20pf Ultramarine, 45 Degree Overprint (2a, 4a; Michel 2I, 4I). Used with 3pf Yellow Brown and 25pf Orange, 56 Degree Overprint (1a, 5; Michel 1IIc, 5II), all tied by excellent strikes of framed "HANKAU" woodblock cancel with Chinese chop at left (also tying 3pf) and manuscript "20/4 1900" date on uprated registered 10pf Carmine, 45 Degree Overprint postal card, addressed to Marseilles, France, Shanghai (Apr. 23), Brindisi (May 24), and red "Modane a Paris" (May 25) transit and Marseilles (May 26) arrival datestamps VERY FINE. A HIGHLY ATTRACTIVE FOUR-COLOR FRANKING ON AN UPRATED 5-PFENNINGS POSTAL CARD WITH THE SCARCE HANKOW WOODBLOCK CANCEL. These provisional cancels are recorded from Apr. 1-Apr. 27, 1900 and were used out of necessity before the normal circular datestamp was supplied by the German post office.
