Gezaghebber van St. Martin (Sint Maarten) Ned. Ged. - Wisselbrief / Slavenbrief Sint Maarten ( Ned. Ged. ) - 1864

Beautiful promissory note (slave letter) , larger than usual, numbered 135, St. Martin (Dutch part) , ‘den 20 september 1864’, issued and signed by the governor of Sint Maarten as compensation to slave owners for the abolition of slavery in 1863. This note is signed by D. C. Kranenburg and the amount of the promissory note is 1400 guilders. The amount was paid out on 5 January 1865. With many remarks, blind-stamped small seal of St. Martin and the text ‘1864 / zestig centen’ and stamps. Interesting historical document. On verso various names, including Percival and A. Samson. There are less promissory notes from this island than from others. Condition: The document is in fairly good condition, but with a few folds, pinholes, burnt pen stroke causing a hole, and as always and a bit frayed. In the edges some cuts and a small piece is missing at the bottom, but because of the larger size this is not obtrusive. Of course with signs of age. The pictures are part of the description.
