Giacinto Brandi (1621–1691), Circle of - San Francesco

[ translate ]

Important ancient collectible painting from the 17th century
\r
Giacinto Brandi (Poli, 23 February 1621 – Rome, 19 January 1691) circle
\r
“Saint Francis”
\r
Oil on panel - circa 1650 - 17th century
\r
The painting depicts Saint Francis, portrayed as an emaciated sufferer and dressed in a simple sackcloth habit. In the 17th century, the personality of the Assisi artist inspired images with a strong naturalistic character, urging the Caravaggesque and dark artists to paint his composed and penitential prayer with realism. The panel in question fully belongs to this line of research and has been assigned to Giacinto Brandi for its expressive force and peculiar interpretation, inspired by the models of Giovanni Lanfranco revisited through the chiaroscuro of Mattia Preti. The artist's personal baroque exegesis comes with this work to circumscribe the multiple pictorial directions of seventeenth-century Rome, combining the naturalistic vision with the solidity of a classicist structure and thanks to this synthesis, obtains an undoubted critical consensus around the middle of the century, inducing people to state that: 'Pierfrancesco Mola, Frabitio Chiari, and Giacinto Brandi are of no ordinary expectation, even at a young age'.
