Giancarli 1636 Engraving Satyr Visscher
Polifilo Giancarli (aka Zancarli, Venice ca. 1600-1625) by Visscher, Claes Jansz, (1587 - 1652). Satyr with a sword and dagger. Copper Engraving on laid paper. 1636. Printed in Amsterdam, Holland. Dimensions: Plate size 2 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches. Framed dimensions: Approximately 13 x 21 inches. Plate from a series of friezes Old master Italian Artist Polifilo Giancarli. Design for a frieze filled with a meandering acanthus scroll and various figures. On the left side of the frieze is a hybrid satyr whose lower body morphs into acanthus leaves is depicted holding a sword and a dagger. He looks over his shoulder to the left where a lion like creature is biting him on the head while another bear type creature is biting his shoulder, three playful putti and a dragon headed snake have been depicted among a grouping of large flowers.
