?Glynn Williams (British, b. 1939) Morning Ancaster weatherbed limestone 15cm high, 103cm wide, 63cm deep overall; unique On view at: The Sculpture Park Hailing from Shrewsbury, Glynn Williams was educated at Wolverhampton College of Art during the 1950s, and subsequently worked in Rome at the British Institute for several years, after winning the prestigious Prix de Rome scholarship. Later on in his career he taught sculpture at the Wimbledon School of Art, and the Royal College of Art, where he was for a time also Head of Sculpture.Though Williams began his career as an abstract sculptor, he started to create figurative carvings from English stones in the late 1970s. After first producing several upright figures, he created a number of sculptures which 'hugged the ground', including the present lot. Capturing a moment of tenderness, the stylised figures show the monolithic, essential quality of Williams' carving, departing from the exactitudes of anatomy yet retaining a remarkable sensitivity to human form and emotion.He completed various public commissions, including the Purcell Memorial and the monument of David Lloyd George in Parliament Square. His limestone portrait bust of Noel Gilroy Annan, Baron Annan, is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. A similar piece also entitled Morning, executed around the same time as the present lot, is in the collection of Tate Britain, London ?
