Gorgeous Roman Glass Bead Necklace

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A stunning necklace of a wearable form, composed of dozens of opaque and near-opaque glass beads in pearlescent white, lime-green, blue-green, and forest-green hues. The composition displays alternating green and white beads along the strands with some boasting carinated, fluted, spherical, faceted, or cylindrical forms, and the central pendant is a fluted sphere composed of translucent green glass. Strung in modern times and capped with a modern silver loop and lobster clasp, this is a wonderful example of ancient art meets modern style! Size (necklace): 22" L (55.9 cm); size of largest bead (fluted pendant): 0.875" W x 1" H (2.2 cm x 2.5 cm).

Provenance: ex-collection of Norio Goto, Tokyo, Japan, collected between 1960 and 1990, thence acquired by family via descent

Condition Report: Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Glass beads are ancient, and stringing and silver components are modern. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads and central pendant, with light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits as well as attractive rainbow iridescence throughout.
