Gorgeous Roman Glass Footed Vessel

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st century CE. A charming mold-made yellow glass cup, its graceful form with a curved profile and a band of vine-like relief motifs around the lower half, perhaps intended to make it easier to hold. An applied disc foot curves around its pointed base, allowing it to sit flat. The rim flares outward slightly and is ground smooth. A lovely example with traces of rainbow and silvery iridescence, with a pleasing weight and shape to fit perfectly into the palm of your hand. You can easily imagine an ancient Roman swirling his or her wine in this glass! Size: 3" W x 2.95" H (7.6 cm x 7.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Dere Family Collection, NY acquired in 1980's-2000's

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#135074
Condition Report: Repaired from two pieces. The repair is well done and difficult to see. Rich deposits on surface commensurate with age including some faint rainbow and silvery iridescence. No pontil mark as this is mold-made. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
